Whilst reading the Orwell novel, the complex narrative descriptions created in Nineteen Eighty-Four painted a world of detail in my head that I felt could suit a soundtrack. The dystopian nature of the story meant that, once again, I was forced to challenge my primal instincts of organic instruments, and create a sci-fi environment for the story to sit upon. The process involved writing lists of details within the story, titles for songs, elements to focus on, moments in the book that I wanted to compose to, and then forming my toolkit from this.
I created new digital sounds, experimenting further than I had before, to create both rich drone-like sounds, as well as arpeggios to build tension and drama. In full, the project was a fun experience in writing alongside something real, something I could write to, and use to validate my ideas, rather than purely improvising.
